YEVGENY YANINOV,
leading engineer of gas turbines and GTPP operation and maintenance department of Aviadvigatel OJSC

Success of any equipment is based on reliability, efficiency and high quality service. The extensive after-sales service network gives Perm-made gas turbine equipment a competitive edge.
Owing to the beginning of gas turbines development, the Industrial Engine Team was created in the year 1993 as part of the flight test and operation division, later reorganized into the Department of gas turbines and power plants operation and maintenance.
Aviadvigatel OJSC, being responsible for each and every engine produced, keeps and develops its 70-year long traditions of aviation service, now applying them to power generation and gas transmission business.

Aviation-class service on the ground

Same as in aviation, the philosophy of Aviadvigatel-designed gas turbine equipment maintenance is based upon the following:

  • ensuring uninterrupted operation and downtime reduction;
  • using modern diagnostic and monitoring tools to keep the fleet of engines operational as long as possible, avoiding downtime for repairs;
  • introducing structural modifications to improve reliability and operating performance.

Four cornerstones of Aviadvigatel's service

The system of after-sales service of Perm gas turbine equipment reposes on four cornerstones:

  1. Technical support - remote condition monitoring of the equipment in operation, elaboration and forwarding of recommendations on operation issues.
  2. Technical maintenance - routine equipment maintenance and prompt maintenance.
  3. Service - in addition to technical support and equipment maintenance may include the following:
    - continuous presence of Aviadvigatel's specialists on site for prompt dealing with emerging issues;
    - components, assemblies and spare parts delivery;
    - work with suppliers;
    - training of operating company's technicians, etc.
  4. Designer supervision - periodic inspection of the equipment operation correctness.

Service maintenance of manufactured and delivered equipment is also performed by Customer Support Department (CSD) specialists of PMZ, gas turbine serial manufacturer. The main thing that makes the work of CSD specialists different from the job of Aviadvigatel's operation and maintenance department is the service subject itself. PMZ services a large fleet of gas turbines operating as part of gas compressor plants and gas turbine power plants.

Aviadvigatel OJSC being a designer and supplier of gas turbine power plants, solves all the technical issues and renders much wider range of maintenance services, encompassing all GTPP equipment.

Operation and maintenance department together with other subdivisions provides total package of services, including delivery, assembly, commissioning, and maintenance of the supplied equipment. A substantial part of the volume of services being rendered is the technical direction of pre-commissioning  of the gas turbines installed as part of gas compressor plants. It should be noted that practically all of the gas turbines for the gas compressor plants produced for line and booster compression stations, as well as those for the underground gas storage stations of Gazprom OJSC were installed and set up with direct involvement of Aviadvigatel's operation and maintenance department specialists.

Apart from pointing out Aviadvigatel's dominance as a designer and manufacturer of gas turbine equipment, it is worth mentioning that the operation  and maintenance department specialists promptly and directly forward equipment operation information to the design departments. This ensures reliability of the information, reduces time needed for making troubleshooting decisions, and increases efficiency of the measures being elaborated.

In order to perform its coordinating functions, the operation and maintenance department performs analysis, studying a range of requirements of existing and potential customers. It also concludes contracts with operating companies for a particular type of aftersales service, extends the equipment lifetime, and renders warranty service. It is also significant that the operation and maintenance department specialists participate in investigation of the cases when the equipment delivered is found to be defective.

Troubleshooting in operation

A characteristic feature of gas turbine development is the short period of time which separates design work commencement and start of operation. In essence, the final debugging of the first series-production gas turbines is conducted under operation conditions, with direct participation of the customer's representatives. Thus, the first PAES-2500Ì power plant based on GTU-2,5P gas turbine
No.32-02 was put into pilot operation in Igrim settlement of Tyumen region in December 1995. In the course of several years the specialists of Aviadvigatel OJSC operation and maintenance department together with Gazprom Transgaz Yugorsk Ltd engineers performed technical support of the machine, ensuring prompt correction of the diagnosed defects and improving the machine reliability.

The result of the work done by O. Smirnov, Yu. Golovin, V. Tyurin, V. Bulatov, the specialists of the operation and maintenance department, and of the engaged Design Bureau engineers was that to date GTU-2.5P gas turbine is one of the most reliable Aviadvigatel products, and the «firstborn» - GTU-2.5P gas turbine No.32-02 - boasts 65,000 hours of running time and still is in successful operation at Sorumskoye Line Operation Management of Gazprom Transgaz Yugorsk Ltd.

The acquired pilot operation experience was used at supporting operation of GTU-12P gas turbine No.84-05 and GTU-16P gas turbine No.83-02 on Ordinskaya CS of Gazprom Transgaz Chaikovsky Ltd which became Aviadvigatel's testing ground for trying out new engineering solutions and measures aimed at gas turbine reliability improvement.

GTU-12P gas turbine No.84-05 is the first gas turbine mechanical drive designed by Perm design company. Over the operation period from 1995 to 2002 this gas turbine ran for 27,484 hours, surpassing the specified overhaul period. During the pilot operation of this machine the design company specialists developed and implemented a substantial quantity of measures, which allowed increasing the reliability of the whole fleet of Perm-built gas turbines by several times.

It is necessary to draw attention to the fact that the technical support and maintenance of GTU-12P gas turbine No.84-05 and GTU-16P gas turbine No.83-02 during their pilot operation was performed by the operation and maintenance department specialists of the design company, namely Sergey Abramov, Andrey Bryukhanov, Alexander Gladilov, Vasily German, Yevgeny Kondratiev.  Technical support of the first GTU-25P gas turbine No.87-01 was organized on Igrinskaya CS of Gazprom Transgaz Chaikovsky Ltd in a similar manner.

Demand creates supply

Full packaged technical servicing of the delivered equipment is in maximum demand among  customers. It comprises the following:

  • continuous presence of Aviadvigatel OJSC representatives on site;
  • technical maintenance of equipment exclusively by skilled specialists of our design bureau and of our contractors;
  • equipment condition monitoring, etc.

However, after having accumulated some experience (after two or three years) some operators take over most of the technical maintenance work, leaving to the design bureau technical support and equipment monitoring functions only.

Periodic technical maintenance, extension of the overhaul period, compressor station staff training and instruction, preparation and supply of the training materials enjoy special popularity among the customers.

Good partnership relations have developed between the specialists of the operation and maintenance department and practically every consumer of our products. But the closest ties Aviadvigatel has with Gazprom Transgas Chaikovsky Ltd. The cooperation with LUKOIL-Zapadnaya Sibir Ltd, Silvinit OJSC, Bashkir Power Generating Company Ltd  is also developing dynamically.

In 2008-2009 due to the increase in sales the perspective partnership with Sakhalin Energy Company under the Sakhalin II project, as well as with the specialists of TGK-9 OJSC from Perm under CHP-13 plant reconstruction project is quite promising.

The customers' requirements are clear and justified: they expect the design bureau to provide competent work, speedy decision-making, substantiation and effectiveness of the recommendation provided.

From Moscow to the farthest reaches

The geographical locations of the gas turbine equipment of Aviadvigatel, OJSC are dispersed over the country and as a result the destinations of business trips of our department specialists include the wide range of the regions: from Byelorussia to Sakhalin, from the Northern Caucasus to the Yamal peninsula. Sometimes the life conditions are quite hard, especially on the locations in the Far North: the piercing wind, geomagnetic oscillations, polar days and polar nights. But such extreme conditions do not affect the quality of our specialists' work.

At present the specialists of Aviadvigatel's operation and maintenance department provide continuous service of the three Ural-4000 GTPPs of the Bashkir Power Generating Company OJSC; the five Ural-6000 GTPPs of the Ivanovo Power Generating Company; Silvinit OJSC and LUKOIL-Zapadnaya Sibir Ltd, and of the major power generating object of Perm engine builders - 72 MW GTPP at Vat‘-Yoganskoye  oil and gas field.

Together with other organizations Aviadvigatel performs maintenance of more than 445 gas turbines operated as part of gas compressor plants and gas turbine power plants.
